Other than killing pathogenic microorganisms, the immune system also protects the body from its own invading pathogens and thus protects itself from any infections caused by the invading pathogens. In order to kill invading microorganisms, the immune system produces antibodies that are able to recognize pathogens. The antibodies then bind with the pathogens and can travel through the bloodstream to reach the target organs, where the antibodies will remove the pathogens from the body's tissues. There are several types of antibodies, including natural antibodies produced by the body to neutralize invading pathogens and vaccines that provide the body with antibodies.

 

In many cases, the immune systems fail to neutralize pathogens and the body cannot properly defend against an attack. In this case, a patient may suffer from an infection or may develop other health conditions such as cancer, hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. When the immune system is under-developed or has a compromised function, there is a greater risk of acquiring such diseases or developing health conditions.

 

The immune system is very essential in fighting against the various infections, but a person who has a weakened immune system may not be able to fight against an infection. Therefore, it is important that a person with an impaired immune system must take care to avoid certain foods that may increase the immune system and reduce the risk of developing or worsening any illnesses caused by the disease.
